Inserting pictures, free text and annotate with To Do List ’tick boxes’ or Question Marks helps me to make the Notebook really useful. While the functionality is similar to what we know from other OneNote apps, the app has of course been given a visual overhaul for OS X (as pictured above). In addition to launching the free Mac App, Microsoft is also making other versions of OneNote free starting today that will make the service free across platforms including PC, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, the web, and Android. From both a personal and professional standpoint, it is a highly functional and utility-laden piece of software, which is rapidly overtaking such other services like Word or Pages as my go-to word processor. The ability to save and sync across a plethora of devices/platforms instantly, share with other software easily, and import a vast variety of data make OneNote the best Microsoft app by far! Professionally, I use OneNote Class Notebooks with students and other educators, to replace traditional Word documents and class exercise books. Being able to access students’ work anywhere, collaborate with both staff and students, and store such a variety of media makes OneNote perfect for education. From the automatic date/time stamping of pages, to not having to worry about saving due to instant syncing with the cloud, OneNote really has changed the way we do things at work. Personally, I use OneNote to keep track of home incident reports, plan trips and holidays with family and friends and QuickNotes for extended yet non-essential information.

This version of OneNote is still lagging behind where it was on Win 8.1 - though there have now been some updates which have improved it. The insert picture from camera now works, and the pinch to zoom is actually there (it is just suggested disabled on setup). Move pages between sections and books now works!

I’ve sampled a few electronic notebooks, usually from AppleStore and found myself switching back to paper after a few days because the on-line apps were cumbersome to use and not very flexible. However, I think I’ve found one that meets all my needs. MicroSoft One Note gives me the ability to separate work and personal action plans into accessible on-line NoteBooks, with the ability to switch easily between the two. The structure of Pages and Sections really meets my needs to structure my data. Also it’s easy to sync across my laptop, iPad and iPhone so I can update my list of To Do’s whilst on the train, or track my customer account actions in client meetings.
