Ubercorner22 Great app. Takes some time to build up a workflow, but once you do it’s miles ahead of almost every other note taker. Only exception is Notability, which I think has a little bit better handwriting capability, but not nearly the organizational ability that OneNote has. If you want to be able to organize your notes into more than just one tier of folders, then you have to move to OneNote. The organization is way better than any of the other apps out there, and there’s way more support on the backend as this is synced through Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud, so you know that it has the support of a company that’s not going anywhere.

We compared everything from interface to note organization to help you choose. What works best for you? And that others Has Evernote's recent price increase and two-device restriction for the free plan disturbed your note-taking workflow? Then, it's time to take another look at some of the best Evernote alternatives., but no app offers as much as OneNote does for free. If you want bang for your buck, there’s no better choice. If not, then your opinion is irrelevant. If you had read more closely, you would have noticed that my main complain of the Ribbon concept is how Microsoft has arbitrarily grouped unrelated functions under the same tab because of space constraints. That was not a problem with the menu. The menu was hierarchical which meant that functions were grouped by groups and sub groups while everything is flattened into a tab now and it can take more time to find what you are looking for.

What does Evernote do poorly and/or OneNote do better? (curious - i've never used ON) How is this better than Evernote? Honest question. What advantages does it offer? I've used both products heavily for a number of years so I have some opinions on this. I generally prefer OneNote but have been an Evernote Premium subscriber for years due to the lack of a Mac app and limited mobile support, so I'm their target here. OneNote wins in my opinion in UI - Evernote has a very traditional flat notepage interface where organizing things in anything other than a fixed linear format is difficult.

OneNote treats each page as an endless canvas where you can paste almost any content in any location with no traditional formatting limits - ie. You can insert a photo, type some text around it, add some drawings, and each element remains separate and able to be moved to any location on the page even overlaying other elements. This, and the fact that it overall looks and feels like other Office apps means there is little learning curve.

The ribbon interface was introduced back in 2007. The ribbon interface, in all of its forms, is an example of bad UI design. Select your meeting and watch OneNote pull in the meeting details, including Subject, Date and Location, Attendees and the details listed in the messasge section of the invitie. I used this recently and the feedback from management was laudatory.

Inserting pictures, free text and annotate with To Do List ’tick boxes’ or Question Marks helps me to make the Notebook really useful. I like the features to include email and the share feature, to share with my family or even colleagues. I think I’ll persevere with this one. Why did I want to go paperless, aren’t leather notebooks coming back into fashion, if they indeed ever left? Well I got frustrated with my Filofax, that got so crammed and bulky with paper that I need a big laptop bag and the considerable expense of insert sheets and the inflexible A5 notebook which quickly got filled and in no particular order for me to find info other than date sequence.

While the functionality is similar to what we know from other OneNote apps, the app has of course been given a visual overhaul for OS X (as pictured above). In addition to launching the free Mac App, Microsoft is also making other versions of OneNote free starting today that will make the service free across platforms including PC, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, the web, and Android. However, that does not include some premium features such as SharePoint support, version history, and Outlook integration, TheVerge. The Mac App Store page for the app also suspiciously states “available for free for a limited time.” The company also announced a new cloud API that will allow developers to integrate OneNote for easy saving and sharing through the service, a feature that was previously rumored as a web clipping feature and competitor to Evernote.

Hitting the menu on the top left doesn't work, I can only scroll back to my recent pages, which is a hassle for someone with 100's of pages. Restarting the computer doesn't work. You cannot uninstall the application so I guess all my notes are stuck unless I use the even more inferior desktop version. Back on Windows 8.1 this app was near perfect. With this redesign came more than just a new look, it also came with a new host of bugs.

But don’t worry it’s “free.” Don’t you feel the freedom? The initial Preview is version 15.8, a minor step forward from the version in the app store, and that’s exactly what it feels like. The “Where” drop-down list above, historically a “Save As” location selector, is not a list at all. It comically has only One Option: OneDrive.

Under the Options submenu, you can only tweak three things: whether to auto-sync notebooks, whether to auto-sync files and images in notes, and which notebook you want to use for Quick Notes. Under the Trust Center submenu, you can only tweak two things: whether to send personal information to Microsoft to make improvements to OneNote and whether to allow Microsoft to provide “locally relevant content”. That’s literally it! How embarrassing. On the other hand, with OneNote 2016 you get a smorgasbord of settings — both big and small — that you get to tweak to your liking.

Even if I WERE to go ahead and use it anyway, the proxy settings of the department prevent the app from contacting the server. So I CAN’T access my files, create new notebooks or save any changes I make.

In line with from last week, Microsoft today OneNote for the Mac, making several significant changes to the service for both mobile and desktop users. The biggest change is in pricing with OneNote now free across all supported platforms for personal use. The free Mac app also includes 7GB of free OneDrive storage space, which can be expanded by subscribing to Office 365. The Mac version is very similar to the Windows version with only a few subtle visual differences. Both versions share the same notebook metaphor, ribbon interface and freeform note-taking features.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released OneNote app in Mac App Store as a free app. With that release, OneNote is now available on all the platforms: PC, Mac, Windows tablets, Windows Phone, iPad, iPhone, Android and the Web. Even though OneNote for Mac app is not powerful as OneNote 2013, it is well received by the consumers. It has become the most popular free Mac app in the App Store in a single day.

Interface: Sleek vs. Complete The Windows Store app is often criticized for being nothing more than a “stripped down” version of the standalone app, and you’ll feel that the moment you launch it for the first time — the interface is extremely minimal. But I don’t see that as a bad thing. The aesthetics of OneNote 2016 are more consistent with the aesthetics of the other programs in Microsoft Office 2016, whereas the look-and-feel of the OneNote Windows Store app is more in line with other Universal Windows Platform (UWP) Apps. The funny thing is that I actually prefer the stripped down version of the interface. It has most of the same formatting actions that OneNote 2016 has, but fits them all into less space. I’m also a fan of the flat Modern appearance.

Along with a Mac version, Microsoft also is releasing a OneNote clipper browser plug-in for Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Mac Safari that allows users to save clippings from webpages. Mcflange Having used earlier versions of OneNote and found them wanting, this new version really does impress! From both a personal and professional standpoint, it is a highly functional and utility-laden piece of software, which is rapidly overtaking such other services like Word or Pages as my go-to word processor. The ability to save and sync across a plethora of devices/platforms instantly, share with other software easily, and import a vast variety of data make OneNote the best Microsoft app by far! Professionally, I use OneNote Class Notebooks with students and other educators, to replace traditional Word documents and class exercise books. Being able to access students’ work anywhere, collaborate with both staff and students, and store such a variety of media makes OneNote perfect for education. From the automatic date/time stamping of pages, to not having to worry about saving due to instant syncing with the cloud, OneNote really has changed the way we do things at work. Personally, I use OneNote to keep track of home incident reports, plan trips and holidays with family and friends and QuickNotes for extended yet non-essential information.

This version of OneNote is still lagging behind where it was on Win 8.1 - though there have now been some updates which have improved it. The insert picture from camera now works, and the pinch to zoom is actually there (it is just suggested disabled on setup). Move pages between sections and books now works!

If you love OneDrive and can’t wait to with your data, download the OneNote 2016 for Mac preview. If not, you can. The real problem with cloud-only access for OneNote is that it makes the program a useless tool for many corporate users.

I’ve sampled a few electronic notebooks, usually from AppleStore and found myself switching back to paper after a few days because the on-line apps were cumbersome to use and not very flexible. However, I think I’ve found one that meets all my needs. MicroSoft One Note gives me the ability to separate work and personal action plans into accessible on-line NoteBooks, with the ability to switch easily between the two. The structure of Pages and Sections really meets my needs to structure my data. Also it’s easy to sync across my laptop, iPad and iPhone so I can update my list of To Do’s whilst on the train, or track my customer account actions in client meetings.
