In 2012, Miller auditioned for and won a spot on the second season of the Fox singing competition with her performance of the Dixie Chicks' 'Cowboy Take Me Away.' During the show's boot-camp phase, Miller was assigned pop star and judge Britney Spears as her mentor. Although she performed well on the show and drew a large fan following, she ultimately exited in ninth place. After leaving The X Factor, Miller signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records/Syco Music and began work on an album. Following an initial five-song EP, she delivered her 2015 full-length debut album, Not an Apology, which featured production from the Suspex, Mike Del Rio, Matt Squire, and others.
Searching, jazzy, even philosophical, his music—often self-produced under the name Larry Fisherman—came to split the difference between popular appeal and creative ambition, uniting collaborators at both ends of the spectrum, from Snoop Dogg to Flying Lotus. Even when the subject matter grew dark—Miller dealt openly with substance abuse before his death in September 2018 at age 26—he was candid and personable about channeling his struggles into relatable art.

It’s as much a play as an album, with recurring characters and themes surrounding a singular figure across 17 tracks. “Every different project was just a state of mind I was in,” he says. “And some of them were made over months, some were in four days.
