My solution is that I no longer accept documents in the native Office file formats; have stopped using any MS Office applications to produce documents; keep the MS applications on only one machine that I use to access legacy material of mine; and try to have them active only when I'm not connected to a network. If you don't have a clean backup, it would probably work to trash the file and start over, but I wanted to keep my preferences. Just struggled through this one for a while. I updated Office, then replaced prefs in both ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data and ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
